Cinnamon Squares

I am addicted. To cinnamon squares that is. My mother-in-law Rita makes them. It is quite similar to what others may call Dr. Pepper cake or Texas sheet cake. Yummy chocolate/cinnamon cake with delicious icing on top. One day while in Cabo, I told Ryan I'd pay $100 for a cinnamon square. This past Sunday we went to visit Larry and Rita, show them pictures from the trip and all. Afterward we all went to dinner. While finishing up, I looked at Rita and jokingly said, "so are we ready to head back home for some cinnamon squares?" And to my delight, Rita said yes! She had made them for us! I was so excited! So each day I've been enjoying my favorite dessert thanks to Rita. How can the week get any better when you start it out like that!

Aca y Alla

So just before we went to Cabo I got my hair cut. There are two hair dressers in the little shop I go to, and it is quite a small space. So you get to hear others' conversations. Amber cuts my hair. But Patricia is always cutting the most random people's hair, highlighting and such. This particular day, there was a dude in there that I am pretty sure was drunk. There was a 30 minute conversation about the seven dwarfs. He INSISTED that Sleazy was one of the seven dwarfs. I kept telling him, dude, no, it's Sneezey. He never did believe me. He came up with a few others that were completely off the wall. But this got Amber and I thinking...could we name the seven dwarfs without looking them up on the internet or watching the movie? We could...can you?

Chocolate Covered Nutter Butters

So they had nutter butters on sale at Tom Thumb the other day for $2.50 a bag, so I bought two bags. It gave me a good excuse to make the chocolate covered nutter butters last night. They are so addicting! I think they are my favorite dessert in the world right now...or maybe it's just because I have them here to eat. Rita's cinnamon squares are right up there too, but I don't have any at work with me today. Anyways, as I sit here enjoying the two I brought with me, I realized if I would have brought the whole bag, they'd be gone. I'm especially excited about the double stack one I made. That one I'll enjoy tonight...unless Ryan ate it for breakfast.
Happy President's Day everyone!

Going Home Day Pictures

Monday - Very Sad Going Home Day

Monday – Very Sad Going Home Day

We woke up about eight o’clock on Monday morning very groggy and sad.  We decided we needed at least three more days there.  One to spend in SJDC; one to go on jet skis out to El Arco; another lay around the beach and do nothing day.  We packed up a bit, then headed down to get some breakfast.  After that, we walked up and down the beach a ways each direction from our resort, I gathered some sand and water in a water bottle, and we headed back up to the pool.  We sat by the pool for a while, taking note of all the others doing the same thing we were.  Everyone looked tired and sad.  Went back to the room, showered, finished packing and headed off to the lobby.  We were among the last few to get there.  Put our stuff in a gigantic pile and walked over to the balcony to sit and wait for the buses to take us to the airport.  They arrived right at noon, we boarded and waved goodbye to the Melia Cabo Real.  Getting our seats and through security took quite a long time.  We were ready for lunch by the time we made it through.  We ate at a place called Wings which was up a rather shaky flight of stairs in the terminal.  We ate, had time to browse around a few shops, then we started to board.  People weren’t near as chatty as they were on the way there.  Seemed the whole plane was asleep for a while.  Getting through customs here in the US really wasn’t bad at all on a Monday night.  Hardly anyone there.  We got home about 8:00 and were pleasantly surprised to find the house a comfortable 68 degrees.  I got us unpacked and our wet suits from the pool/beach washed, then got us in bed.  We had such a fantastic trip.  I highly recommend Los Cabos.  Especially this time of year…whales, weather, the lack of lots of people…just wonderful.

Love to all…hope ya liked the stories!

Aaarrrgghhhh! Ahoy Matey!

Sunday – Aarrghhhh! Day

We slept until 8:00, then decided to mosey on over for some breakfast and to find out who was going snorkeling with us. A few people had mentioned they were going to book the same tour we did. Which was snorkeling via pirate ship (aaarggghhhh matey!). We goofed around the pool for a bit, then made our way over to the lobby at 10:45 to catch a cab to the marina for our snorkeling adventure upon the Buccaneer Queen. Eight of us all had booked the same tour. Which really helps out with the cab fare. The driver dropped us off right at the marina entrance to our boat! Lots of black crabs had crawled up on the rocks of the marina to bask in the sun. Kinda goofy looking. With their legs they were about as big as my hand. We started to board just before noon. The ship was a huge pirate ship. And they played pirate-like songs until we finally shipped off. There were about thirty of us snorkeling that day. Without our group, it would’ve been quite empty. The water was really choppy so the ship bobbed up and down, up and down. First look out the marina was Lover’s Beach, Divorce Beach, the Arch of course, and a sea lion colony. Ryan and I had debated about taking a four hour jet ski tour of the arch, surrounding areas, and you could snorkel on it too…but it was four times per person than the pirate ship excursion so we didn’t do it. If I ever go back to Cabo, I’m paying the extra money to take the jet ski tour…would’ve been worth every penny of it. Anywho, back to pirating. The ride out to Chilleno Bay where we snorkeling took almost an hour. It felt like longer with all that bobbing up and down. We all were given snorkels and masks neither of which worked extremely well and were told to walk the plank…yarrrr garrrr! So, you know how when you get brain freeze…or when someone puts an ice cube down your back and you are already cold…imagine that times a hundred. The Pacific Ocean water was freezing! But, you had to swim about 200-300 yards over to where you see the fish so you were somewhat warmer by the time you got over there. The guide would throw bread in the water and the fish would swarm around you. We both had a blast! So much fun to get to see this whole new world living underwater. We didn’t see many bright colored fish. I did catch a pretty black and orange one you’ll see in a picture. But for the most part, not many bright colors. Ryan was even brave enough to dive down to the bottom and come back up. Said the pressure though was unreal! Everyone from our little group got together and tried to go underwater for a picture…not sure how that one will turn out :o) Not long after that, I looked around and noticed the other two girls were as cold as I was…shivering horribly, so I headed back to the boat. When I turned around, I guess everyone else was thinking what I was because they were all coming too. When you got back onto the boat, you just dropped your mask and snorkel into what appeared to be normal water…I question how sanitized that stuff was…ick! Oh well…they sprayed you down with warm water and scooted you along. Unfortunately, Ryan and I had forgotten to bring towels. I dried of with a t-shirt I’d bought and put on my fleece sweatshirt I’d worn there. Did me no good. I had swallowed a bunch of sea water on accident so I went and got a drink, but couldn’t even hold it. Ryan had to hold it for me. Just spilling everywhere. I must have looked pretty pathetic or worried one of the crew because he came over and wanted me to cover up with a Mexican blanket…but then someone else needed something more urgent…a tequila shot…so I just went and sat in the sun. After everyone was back on board, we shipped off. About two minutes later, one of the guides starting shouting to look to our right that a whale was going to jump out of the water. We were all thinking, yeah right, they just kinda bob up for a second, spray then go back down. But then, whoosh! Baby whale jumps totally out of the water! He was about ten to fifteen feet tall. It was unbelievable! Like what you see on the Discovery Channel or National Geographic! And then up he comes again, and again! Apparently his momma was coaching him on how to jump! All within like thirty feet of us. Then momma bobbed up out of the water, sprayed and went back under…she was about thirty feet long herself! She was gigantic! It was something I won’t forget for the rest of my life that’s for sure :o) All the guides on the boat even had out their video cameras and regular cameras and were taking pictures and all. We had started out as the only boat around, but soon found ourselves to have about five others there with us. Too cool…we pay for snorkeling and get a bit of whale up close and personal in for free. The music on the way back was traditional YMCA, Jimmy Buffet, etc. Everyone I think was on a high from the baby whale. We got off the boat and Ryan and I immediately ditched the rest of the group to hustle back to the hotel…it was already 4 and we had spa appointments at 4:30! The rest of the group went shopping around CSL. We got back to the hotel in just enough time for Ryan to rinse off, and me to change clothes. Ryan got a massage and I got a facial. Both very very relaxing. Neither of us had ever been so lucky as to have these things before and they were both awesome! Especially after several days in the sun running around, etc. We finished up at 5:30 and were supposed to be at the cocktails/appetizers at 6:00 then had a dinner reservation for 6:30. We decided to go ahead and cancel our dinner. We’d heard the food at the place we’d reserved wasn’t all that fantastic, and we really didn’t feel like rushing after just getting out of these soothing appointments. We got down to the cocktail hour and mingled for about forty five minutes the went over to the buffet and had a light dinner. After dinner we walked around the resort a bit, looking at the stars, enjoying the full moon…when this weird looking dude wearing a three amigo costume but white instead of black with a giant wind-up looking thing on his back starts waddling toward us. He had tons of makeup on too. Both of us were a bit creeped out by the whole thing and headed up to the lounge area to see what card games were going on. There I met one of Ryan’s coworker’s wives who is so sweet! She and I talked for about two hours while Ryan talked to the coworker, then went to play some dominos. She’s a mommy entrepreneur and came up with the Secure 2 Me blanket. http://www.secure2me.com/ It is a blanket that clips on to you, the stroller, just anything. That way it doesn’t fall. She and I chatted for quite a long time until eventually more people started joining our table. One of the girls brought over some cards and we started playing BS. You know, it’s the game they play in “How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days.” It started out with four of us and grew to ten! This was also quite fun. We played until about 12:30 then all decided we needed to get some rest before heading home on Monday. Action-packed day for the Smiths…and another one of those nights where you are so tired, it still doesn’t matter the bed isn’t the most comfortable.
And by the way...I felt like I was on a boat the entire night...ugh...up and down...

Saturday - Fun Day!

Saturday – Fun Day!

Saturday started pretty much like Friday…except I got up at 6:00 :o) I washed up a bit, then went and claimed our chairs. The sun was just about to rise, so I ran back to the room and made Ryan get up. We went back down to the pool area and watched the sun come up…and the whales of course. Absolutely beautiful. When La Terraza buffet opened we were among the first to get in line. I saw one lady get some pancakes and was like wow…I want them to make me some too. I took one bite and made Ryan try them. They tasted like a cake…they were awesome. Ryan immediately stood and went and got his own short stack.
After breakfast, we proceeded to our beach chairs. There we sat. Getting up only every half hour or so to dip in the pool to cool down. Then the cabana bed right behind us opened up so we moved all our stuff two feet behind us and laid down (now in the shade which is very important to us fair skinned folks). A couple of Ryan’s coworkers took our chairs. They decided to go play a bit of beach volleyball and invited us to come along. I declined, but Ryan went to play. They played for about two hours…I laid around, walked to the water and took some pictures, video, etc. and then met back up with them as they were finishing up their game. Ryan could barely walk. Unlike gulf sand, the sand in Cabo is like gravel…so put two feet on gravel-like sand for two hours…you get the drift…he could barely walk. We immediately headed to the pool to cool his feet down. And then the crazy afternoon games began. The resort has designated activities people. And Saturday afternoon was labeled “Gringo Bingo.” For those of you who have never played (or observed…which is what we did because we were in the pool) the person calling out the numbers was dressed in a large black and white cow suit and the person pulling the numbers was dressed as the devil…anyone who claimed to have won, they called a cheater (and they would start shouting on the microphone, “cheater”, and then again in Spanish). Then they would start chanting “belly flop, belly flop” and convince the person to belly flop into the pool. It was extremely disturbing, but also very entertaining…but seriously, why the cow and the devil? We are still confused. Anywho, we realized that it was already two o’clock and the lunch buffet was about to close. So even though we weren’t that hungry, we went and ate some lunch. After lunch we went straight back to our cabana bed and took a nap…ahhhh…nap in the middle of the day, listening to the ocean. Very very relaxing. We both woke up somewhat confused of our whereabouts, then sat around to watch the afternoon whales. At about 4:30, we headed off to the room and cleaned up for the beach dinner party that evening. Dinner on the beach this time was much more normal. Grilled chicken, grilled beef, and sausage, several types of salads…you get the drift. They had a live band which was extremely loud. After dinner most of us retreated to the lounge area for cards, dominos, etc. One of Ryan’s coworkers approached us about a night on the town in Cabo. Several of us went and changed and met in the lobby. About twenty of us in all. We split two cabs. There were obvious leaders to this group. A few of the guys had made it a point to go out in town every night we were there. So we followed. We started out at a place called Zoo, then meandered over to another somewhat famous joint called Cabo Wabo. Lots and lots of people watching to do in CSL at night. I was following one of Ryan’s younger coworkers when walking into one of the bars. The second we walked through the door he turned to me and said, it smells like a port-o-potty right? It did! Like one of those urinal cakes! The number of middle aged Americans who had decided to throw their cares away, take a half dozen shots of tequila and dance were in abundance. Needless to say, we didn’t stay there long. Then we went on a little trek through the back streets trying to find our next place to sit. It was odd that at night, while in a group, no one approaches you offering all the illegal substances as they do during the day. SAFETY IN NUMBERS FOLKS. Remember that! We ended up back at Zoo and stayed there for a couple of hours, dancing, people watching, running in to more coworkers and their spouses. A lot of fun and very entertaining. We left Zoo at about 1:15, following the rest of the group. It is funny how you don’t really know when you are leaving until you see half your group walking out the front door. This time when the party decided to change locales, much to our regret, we knew it was time to go home. Four of us grabbed a cab and headed back to the hotel. Got back about 2 and got immediately into bed. Learned the next day a couple others were only about fifteen minutes behind us. The rest of them stayed out until 4:00! And that’s mountain time!
Absolutely awesome day, but needed our Z’s. Come on folks…I did get up at 6:00 :o)

Friday - Cabo San Lucas Day

Friday – Cabo San Lucas Day

I woke up on Friday morning at 6:30 and anxiously waited for Ryan to wake up. I finally couldn’t take it and woke him up. My face was washed, hair combed, teeth brushed, bathing suit on, and I was ready to start the day! We got down to the pool area about 7:00 and surprisingly most of the good spots were already taken! We found two chairs and put down our things and went off to the breakfast buffet. As soon as breakfast was done, we plopped ourselves down in the chairs only getting up to go book our snorkeling adventure for Sunday (aarrgghhhh!) and every once in a while to cool ourselves down in the pool. We went back to the room at 11:30, cleaned up and headed into CSL. I had read all on trip advisor to seek out this little taco place called Gordo Lele’s. They claim he makes the world’s best taco. We took a taxi ride to the marina then started off trying to find this little place. Only took about an hour of serious looking around to find it. And goodness it was well worth it! We were a little skeptical when we first saw it, but then peeked in the door and saw a couple of other tourists in there that had heard the same claim. I ordered one carne asada and one chicken taco and Ryan ordered one fish taco and a Gordolele Torta. My tacos were very simple. A homemade tortilla, corn, the type of meat, and that was it. Ryan’s fish taco was the same way. Very very tasty and if we would have had more time I would have returned and tried everything on the menu. Ryan’s Gordolele torta was ham, cheese, chorizo, and some type of really really hot sauce. It was wonderful and Ryan’s sinuses were cleared! Everything was awesome! I had also heard that if asked, he’d sing to you. So I did. And he does. I can’t think of the name of the song, but it goes like this..”you gave your hand to me, and then you say hello, and I can hardly speak, my heart is beating so…” anyways…he even had this little fake microphone and a toy ukulele he played! It was too funny. Very very sweet man. As we were eating the crowds started coming in. The place was maybe the size of Ryan and I’s bedroom (and that’s including the kitchen). Only had two menus…which were different. And our meal cost us what I think was about $8 and was wonderful. After lunch we moseyed through a couple of shops before heading back to the mall area at the marina. We saw a few of his coworkers milling around and one announced she was going to take the public bus back. Only 17 pesos…about $1.25. That sure beats the $25 we had to pay for the cab on the way there so we went with her. Okay…so here’s the deal…random sketchy dude gets on the bus with us and starts passing out all these little strips of paper which say something I’m sure about how he’s raising money for blah blah blah, but we can’t understand a word on the paper. Then he gives this two minute speech and walks up and down the bus with a can asking for money. I’m not sure how much he made, but were a bit nervous and relieved when we got off. Good experience…wouldn’t ride it at night. We got back about 3, changed and headed off for the deck. Pool was a little cool in the shade so we went ahead and got in the hot tub. Then it started…everyone gets really excited and pointing…our first whale sightings. Watched there until about 4:30, then went to get dressed for dinner. The company had arranged for shuttles to take people in shifts into Cabo San Lucas. We had walked past a neat looking little place at the marina earlier in the day called Ole Ole, so there we returned. Trino was our server. One of the sweetest waiters ever. He brought us what he called “queso fundido.” Alright…it by itself is almost worth the plane fare back down there. It was baked, so the top had a little crust on it, then the inside was warm and gooey and just perfect. Just awesome. We enjoyed the rest of our dinner, people watching, watching boats come in and out, then a guy playing a ukulele started playing songs (somewhere over the rainbow w/ a ukulele was really neat...I think you can find it on Seeqpod). So peaceful and a great end to an awesome evening in Cabo. We caught one of the first shuttles back at 7:40. On the shuttle we met another couple and a guy who had bought some wooden dominos from a man in the marina claiming to have carved them himself. And they were beautiful. So we all decided to meet back up in the lounge area of the hotel and play some 42 and cards. The cards weren't normal cards, but a game called fluxx. Alright folks, this is one of the most fun, frustrating, crazy games ever. Invented by rocket scientists...literally. I’m not going to try to explain it because I can’t. The rules always change, the goals of the game constantly change, but it’s really really fun! We played until about 12:30 then decided to call it a night. Such a wonderful, fun-filled day, and again, we fell asleep as soon as our heads hit our pillows.

I'll post pictures of day two tonight.

Arriving Day Pictures

At the Brazilian Beach Party...they handed out like a hundred long balloons and everyone was waving them around. Looked really neat. Then I made a giraffe out of ours.

Feet!

Arriving Day

So the easiest way to tell everyone about our trip is day by day...so I'll begin...

Thursday – Arriving Day

We woke up at about 6:00 Thursday morning. We’d both showered the night before so that way we could try to sleep a bit later. Larry picked us up at 7:00 and we got to the airport right at 7:30. The Mexicana (the airline we flew on) ticket counter wasn’t open…so we all sat around and stared at one another until finally they started getting all 100-120 of us checked in. We got through security and decided to eat a good breakfast at Bennigan’s. When done, we sat at our gate. We boarded the plane about 10:30 and left DFW right at 10:50. We arrived in Cabo at about 12:30 mountain time. After we all made it through customs, we were swept onto two buses waiting to take us to our resort.
Los Cabos is the name of the area. Two cities about 30 minutes apart. San Jose Del Cabo (SJDC) is the old town and Cabo San Lucas (CSL) more of the touristy town. Our resort was right in between SJDC and CSL. Upon arrival to the resort (Melia Cabo Real), we were greeted with pina coladas and long tables to expedite the check in of so many of us. We received yellow wrist bands we had to keep on the whole trip in order to eat, etc. Ryan and I made our way to our room. Third Floor looking out of the first hole of a golf course…to the far left out our balcony you could see the ocean. Lots of palm trees, and tons of bougainvillea. It was growing there like hedges! Everywhere you looked. Bright pink and bright purple. Absolutely gorgeous. We immediately got everything unpacked, changed into warm weather clothes and went off walking. The temperatures there were from lows in the fifties to highs in the eighties. We moseyed around the pool and Ryan ate a snack from the pool snack bar. Me, I’d eaten lunch on the plane. Yes, they served either chicken or pasta on the plane! I had the tortellini. Not too bad, but Ryan was disgusted by it…anyways…back to Cabo. So we ate then walked down to the beach. The sand was like gravel. Extremely rough on the feet. But the water was beautiful. Alls shades of blue to a light turquoise. Absolutely beautiful. It’s amazing. You get into your own little rut…you look out your window and things are brown and gray and somewhat dreary. Makes you forget there are beautiful places like this just waiting for you to come visit them. Anywho, we went back up to the room and got cleaned up for the Brazilian Beach Party Dinner. This involved some very interesting looking foods, a guy throwing around fire, a lady in a green sparkly bikini and of course dancing. Lots and lots of dancing. In fact they did some kind of contest and one of Ryan’s coworkers won a free massage! A very fun and very exciting day all in all. We got back to the room and both fell right to sleep. We had heard the beds were extremely uncomfortable…which while they weren’t the most comfortable in the world, I was so tired, it didn’t matter if I laid down on a rock…I was exhausted! Plus...come on now...it's free!
